Root Canal Treatment in Ramanathapuram: Why the Fear Is Bigger Than the Procedure
"Doctor, please don't do root canal, just remove the tooth" - we hear this at least once a week at our Agraharam Road clinic. It's almost always based on someone's story from years ago, or a cousin's cousin's bad experience, not on what root canal treatment actually feels like today. If a painful tooth has you putting off a visit, here's what you're actually dealing with, and why waiting usually makes things worse, not better.
What a root canal is actually treating
A tooth has a soft inner layer called the pulp, with nerves and blood vessels running through it. When deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work lets bacteria reach the pulp, it gets infected and inflamed - that's the throbbing, keep-you-up-at-night pain patients come in with. Root canal treatment (RCT) removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, then seals it so the infection can't come back. The tooth itself stays in your mouth, doing its job, instead of leaving a gap that then needs a bridge or implant to fill.
Why it doesn't hurt the way people think
The pain people associate with "root canal" is actually the pain of the infection before treatment. Once we numb the area and start cleaning out the infected pulp, that pressure and throbbing starts easing, not building. At Prema Dental Clinic we use rotary endodontic instruments - motorised, precise tools that clean the canal faster and more comfortably than older hand-file methods - along with modern anaesthesia that keeps the whole procedure pain-free. Most patients tell us it feels similar to getting a routine filling, and are surprised when it's over that they were dreading it for nothing.
What the process looks like
- Diagnosis and X-ray - we confirm the infection's extent and check the tooth's root structure.
- Anaesthesia and access - the area is numbed, and a small opening is made into the tooth to reach the pulp chamber.
- Cleaning and shaping - infected tissue is removed and the canal is cleaned and disinfected thoroughly.
- Filling and sealing - the cleaned canal is filled with a biocompatible material and sealed to prevent reinfection.
- Crown placement (usually recommended) - a crown protects the treated tooth from cracking, since root-canal-treated teeth can become slightly more brittle over time.
With our single-sitting option, many straightforward cases are completed in one visit rather than stretched over several appointments - worth asking about at your consultation if you'd rather not make multiple trips.
What it costs, and why waiting costs more
At Prema Dental Clinic, root canal treatment starts from ₹3,000, depending on the tooth and complexity of the infection. Patients who delay treatment often come back weeks or months later needing extraction plus an implant or bridge - which costs several times more than the root canal would have, and takes the natural tooth out of the picture permanently. If a tooth has been hurting for more than a couple of days, or reacts sharply to hot or cold, it's worth getting checked before the infection spreads further into the bone.
When it's actually an emergency
Sudden severe pain, visible swelling in the face or gum, or pain that keeps you up at night are signs the infection needs urgent attention, not a "let's wait and see" approach. We keep same-day emergency slots for exactly this reason.
